To calculate area requirements see below.
The table above refers to a complete round yard.
Example: 20 x 4.0m panels builds a round area of 504m2. 10 x 4.0m panels used as a half moon holding yard adjacent to an existing yard will have an area of 252m2.

Realistic yard working capacities are quoted. Generally capacities and total holding numbers are based on area requirements to handle and work 2-Tooth dry cattle.

There is much misrepresentation or ignorance within the industry regarding claimed capacities. A circular yard with the same perimeter has a greater surface area than a square or rectangle yard (and stock flow better).
  AREA REQUIREMENTS FOR WORKING YARDS
  Holding Yards Forcing Yards
100 - 300 ku 1.3M2 0.6M2
300 - 500 ku 1.4M2 1.0M2
Over 500 ku 1.6M2 1.2M2
Cows & Calves 2.2M2 2.2M2
  • Holding capacities quoted are for around 400ku dry cattle.
  • Cows and calves should never be tightly forced or in the race together
